Preparing for the Weekend: Chinese New Year + Super Bowl Party
The Year of The Monkey
This coming Sunday, February 7th, 2016 is Super Bowl 50! One of the biggest party days of the year and it just happens to be backed up by the Chinese New Year on the 8th…. the Year of the Monkey. So why not incorporate Chinese New Year traditions with Super Bowl 50…. and have what could be your best SuperBowl party ever!! Today I have gathered a few ways to decorate and a few interesting food suggestions to make a SuperBowl New Year’s Party!! Let’s get started!!
Decorations:
Easy…. go to any party supply store and go the the Chinese New Year department (most all of the big stores have them) and gather things to hang over and use on your table. Let’s start with colors. It’s so tough trying to incorporate both team colors, so this year make it easy and go with traditional Chinese New Year red and gold. I started with a Cowboys football helmet that I spray painted gold and then found a vase that would fit in perfectly. Then I filled that vase with red roses and filled in the empty sides with some gorgeous red hydrangeas. As our table cloth I ran to the fabric store and bought yards and yards of a large sequin material. Please buy extra for what ever you wish to cover so you can use the extra to drape. I added in Chinese coins (again from party store) some paper dragons and Chinese lanterns. In Chinese tradition it is good luck to give coins to friends and family in a red envelope. They also sell these at party supply stores and a lot of stores will give them away fro free. Like our gorgeous Marc Jacobs gold leaf, red envelope.
The Food:
Chinese traditions finger foods are the perfect game day appetizers! Short ribs on the bone, egg rolls, dumplings, edamae and of course supplementing with all the traditional football foods. Chinese fortune cookies… Rice Cakes, and sweetened sticky rice balls are all good luck. Oranges and tangerines eaten and displayed are very good luck to eat on the Chinese New Year.
There you go my Super Bowl Super Fans!! Just a few suggestions to make this Super Bowl extra special and different from your average Dorrito eating event!!
Happiest Chinese New Year and Happy Super Bowl!
All my love,
Laura Dunn
